What’s the Best Type of Gun Rack for Trucks? We’ve Scoped Out All of the Options

A top view of a drawer that extends from the truck bed and there are a pair of dividers installed that are foam and plastic that makes slots that guns can slide down into and be safely secured in the drawer.

If you are one of the millions of Americans who own a gun, then you are in good company. How much company? No one actually knows, because federal law prohibits a central registry of firearms owned by private citizens. Recent surveys suggest the number of firearm owners to be around 22%, or 72 million people, and that’s just the folks who are willing to admit it. There are countless others who don’t. Regardless, the fact still remains that gun owners need places to securely and safely store their firearms, and since we’ve traded in our horses for horsepower, a gun rack for trucks has become more important than ever. At DECKED, we’ve got that squarely in our sights and have aimed to do something about it…

Are Gun Racks for Trucks Legal?

There is no law that says you can’t mount a few hooks in the back window of your cab. Whether or not you can place your long guns on those said hooks is another matter entirely, and varies state-by-state.

While it used to be commonplace for most pickups to have rear window gun racks for trucks filled with rifles and shotguns in cities and towns all across America, these days that feels like a relic of a bygone era and something we don’t see a ton of anymore, and for various reasons.

It would be a fairly normal sight to see ranchers and farmers driving around their farm rigs with their guns in plain sight, but for other, more urban or suburban dwellers, displaying your firearms in this way may be asking for trouble, and not to mention being illegal depending on where you are.

Even the states with the most lenient gun laws can butt up against states that take a more conservative approach, so the mobile transport of your firearms is vastly more complicated than just locking them up in your gun safe at home.

When selecting the best gun rack for trucks, it’s important to consider the laws in your own state, but also nearby states that you may travel to because outdoor recreation knows no bounds. Hunters will follow the herd. Overlanders will continue to blaze their own trails, and having a locking gun rack for trucks—and the owners who love them—is paramount.

States With the Most Restrictive Gun Laws

Conversely, the following states make firearm ownership and transport subject to a more thorough vetting process, according to World Population Review, and though the states do not prohibit ownership outright, they make gun owners prove their mettle.

The state with the most restrictive gun laws is California, and not far behind are:

  • New Jersey
  • Connecticut
  • New York
  • Hawaii
  • Maryland
  • Massachusetts
  • Rhode Island
  • Washington
  • Delaware
  • Pennsylvania

What Are the Options On a Gun Rack for a Truck?

Fortunately for firearm aficionados, there are many different types of racks for pickups that enable firearm mobility. From suction cup gun racks for trucks, (not recommended), to floor mount gun racks for trucks, or even overhead gun racks for trucks, there’s a full gamut of options, but the best, most convenient, and secure gun rack for truck beds is made by us, here at DECKED. (You didn’t think this was a Tufloc article, now did you)?

Overhead Gun Rack for Trucks

Sometimes Googled as a “hidden gun rack for roof inside truck” or “inside gun rack for truck roof,” this style of rack mounts overhead and offers semi-concealed storage for firearms. The best racks would be lockable, have padding at the stock, handle, and scope locations, and at the very least have a way to secure the gun onto the rack if no lock is present.

The obvious drawbacks are that the gun is positioned overhead, making you less safe in case of an accident, and can produce some pretty annoying rattling at times.

Vertical Gun Rack for Trucks

Vertical gun racks install directly to the floor and work well for folks who regularly travel with their firearms, especially on rugged terrain. They offer protection from the bumps and bruises your firearms may incur with a horizontal gun rack, but since most mount between the seats, it puts your rifle or shotgun in plain sight.

This style of gun mount also comes in a dual vertical mount option as well.

Floor Mount Gun Rack for Trucks

We don’t know about you, but the floors of our pickups would not be a good place to store our guns. Often the place of a long-forgotten Cheeto, errant stickiness, and general rubbish pile, storing firearms on the floor has its drawbacks.

Appealing, due to its out-of-sight location, floor mount gun racks are considered the “gun rack for the back window of the truck’s” younger sibling, and the next-gen in gun mounts.

The best floor mounts offer padding and safety locks so with all of the vehicle’s jostling and vibrations, they never come loose. But floor mount gun racks for trucks create problems for carrying passengers (or kids) in your back seat.

Seat Back Gun Racks for Trucks

These unique storage solutions generally are not very secure, some of them are akin to a coloring book and crayon organizer that you see on seatbacks for children’s toys. Since hardly any of us put our firearms in a “toy” category, we don’t think it’s wise to trust some of our most prized possessions to some fabric with slots in it. Are we right?

Gun Rack for Truck Tool Box

Here’s where we come in, and yeah—steal the show. We’re about to “Wow!” you with a gun rack for truck beds that is right on target for your needs. By using our Piecekeeper accessory in our DECKED Drawer System, you get a gun rack for pickup trucks that is secure, safe, out of sight, and out of your cab, so if you have kids, pets, or regular passengers, storing your guns securely in your truck bed is a much better option.

You Down With DECKED?

Most folks are already familiar with our badassery because over the years we’ve amassed a cult-like following, and not to brag or anything, but more people than our own mothers say that our products are “kinda awesome.”

But if you are a newly initiated member of the Truck Bed Organization Club, allow us to take a moment to explain what we do.

We’ve got two main products, our crossover-style, tough as hell DECKED Tool Box that is waterproof and guaranteed to never dent, ding, or rust, and our highly-capable DECKED Drawer System that is also incredibly durable, weatherproof, and has revolutionized the beds of our trucks and how we work with them.

If you want to learn more about how our company was formed, be sure to check out this article.

The DECKED Drawer System

The Drawer System was born in 2013 after some dudes got together and created a company on a lunch counter napkin, and then spent the next two years in intense research and development making the very best truck bed storage solution on the market today.

What they came up with are two truck bed-length drawers that glide like butter on urethane wheels. With removable accessories, these two weatherproof drawers provide segmented storage for tools, gear, and whatever-the-hell else falls into your must-haves category.

In finding only DIY options available made from plywood and half of the hardware store, the folks at DECKED knew they weren’t the only ones who wanted purpose-built truck bed drawers that could be easily installed and removed and were made in the U.S.A.

But Make it a Gun Rack for Trucks…

“The Drawer System is cool and all, but can you make it a gun rack for trucks?” We heard the call, and silenced it, keeping the peace with our Piecekeepers.

Piecekeepers are an add-on that makes the Drawer System a “next-level” storage solution for your long guns. They are essentially a variation of our Drawer Dividers that can be inserted into any of the slots that line the Drawer System drawers.

Made from foam-backed, molded-resin dividers, Piecekeepers offer secure padding and cradles that grip the stock and barrel. Wide Piecekeepers that fit all full-size trucks and cargo van systems hold three long firearms, while the narrow Piecekeepers that fit Drawer Systems for midsize trucks can secure two long guns.

Scope out our Specs:

Wide Piecekeepers

  • 7.79” tall x 18 ⅝” wide
  • Center slot depth: 4.25”
  • Side slots measured diagonally: 5.25”
  • Clearance above Piecekeeper is less than 1”
  • Accommodates three long guns

Narrow Piece Keepers

  • 7.79” tall x 12” wide
  • Side slots measured diagonally: 5.25”
  • Clearance above Piecekeeper is less than 1”
  • Accommodates two long guns

It’s important to note that not all long guns will fit, and it’s damn near impossible to tell if your particular flavor of firearm will fit until you try.

Because of the variances in most modern long firearms, and ones with a higher stack height, pistol grips, large scopes, cool optics, lasers, and you know—the whole nine yards, we recommend that you measure as best you can before pulling the trigger.

Measure the height from bottom-to-top from the narrowest point on your stock, on or near the trigger guard, to the top of your scope. If the measurement is 6” or less, there’s a good chance your gun will fit. For more in-depth specs, head over to this page on our website.

Piecekeeper Benefits

What's great about the Piecekeeper/Drawer System combo is that there’s no drilling! Almost all of the traditional gun mount options listed above require you to drill into your rig. Even into your roof. WTF? That’s a bit sketchy, right?

The Piecekeepers store your guns safely, securely, and offer a weatherproof storage option that gets your guns out of your cab, and into the bed of your pickup where they belong.

When stored this way, your firearms are quick to stow, quick to remove, and the rest of the space in the Drawer System, (and there’s a lot of it), can be used to store the rest of your hunting and outdoor gear. Did we mention you can store your shells within the actual Piecekeeper too?

We think the best gun rack for trucks are ones that will suit your lifestyle the best. One that you will use often, and when you’re not using it, uninstalls faster than a Les Schwab mechanic comes running. (Now that’s fast.)

Piecekeepers are versatile and make quick work of the mobile firearm storage conundrum. Keep Piecekeepers squarely in your sights, marksmen, because we know we’ve shot a bullseye with this one.
