Will A BakFlip Tonneau Cover Do What You Need?
The BakFlip tonneau cover can be found on pickups and 4x4s all over America and Canada. They actually make quite a few different models, including the BakFlip MX4 tonneau cover, the BakFlip G2 tonneau cover, and the BakFlip F1 tonneau cover, all of which we’ll look into in more detail later in this article.
We’ll assess the strengths and weaknesses of the BakFlip tonneau cover design generally, as well as the pros and cons of each model. We’ll also look at several alternatives to the tonneau cover concept, such as a radical bed protector, and secure storage drawer system from DECKED.
What Is A Tonneau Cover, BakFlip, Or Otherwise?
At its heart, a tonneau cover is a soft or hard cover for the bed of a pickup. It typically either wraps around the outside of the rails, or attaches just inside an/or under the rails – the “low-profile” option. Many more reach some point of compromise between these two extremes, most of which call themselves a low-profile tonneau cover anyway.
A tonneau cover is meant to do three things, primarily.
First, it is meant to cover up and protect the inside of your truck bed and any cargo you might be carrying there. Almost any tonneau, including every instance of the BakFlip tonneau cover we’ve seen, is more-or-less weatherproof. Depending on its quality, a tonneau cover might not keep every drop of water out during a hurricane, but it should keep the bed dry in a light rain.
Second, a tonneau cover is meant to improve the aerodynamic performance of your vehicle. The open bed of a pickup is a nightmare in wind tunnel tests, and these same tests have shown that closing the top opening of the box improves the aerodynamics of your truck. This leads directly to better gas mileage, especially on the highway. This costs you less money, and also improves your carbon footprint – something anyone should be able to get behind.
Lastly, a tonneau cover should improve the appearance of your truck. It should not look like “a pickup wearing a hair net.” A good tonneau cover will make your truck look better and add to its value.
There is a 4th factor, but for many tonneau covers it is more of an afterthought – security. Something like the BakFlip tonneau cover should make it at least a little more difficult for someone to get into your truck bed and steal your cargo. Some tonneau covers place a much higher value on security than others, but none of them are what you’d call “extremely secure.” In fact, the ones that come closest to being secure are the ones that are the hardest to install and least convenient to use.
So, how do BakFlip tonneau covers stack up in these 3 (3½) factors?
In terms of protection from the weather, they do very well. They can keep out the rain and the sun, so long as you close them properly.
Aerodynamically, virtually all modern tonneau covers are the same. Unless it is a very poor design or installed in such a way that leaves it very loose and floppy, the aerodynamic boost is a given, and all tonneaus really give the same performance in that regard. So the BakFlip tonneau cover works in terms of the second factor.
The 3rd factor is looks. Here, each model of BakFlip tonneau cover works differently. Some look a lot better than others – generally the more expensive they are, the better they look – but there is a lot of room for individual taste here.
Last, security. None of the models of BakFlip tonneau cover we’ll look at today are amazing in terms of security. Some are more secure than others, but all have fallen on the side of making installation and use easier. This really is the best choice. After all, if you can’t actually achieve security, why compromise everything else just to come close?
So, let’s look at some individual BakFlip tonneau cover models.
BakFlip MX4 Tonneau Cover
The BakFlip MX4 tonneau cover is a hard, 3 panel, folding design. All three panels lift up to allow access to all but the top 6-8 inches of the bed. It has rubber bumpers to prevent it scratching your rear cab window when in the “up” position. Its side rails cap your bed’s existing rails, and work to drain water away from the bed. It can be opened whether the tailgate is up or down. It installs without drilling.
BakFlip MX4 Tonneau Cover Prices
Depending on the year and model of your truck, you can expect to pay anywhere from $1,000 to $1,100 for a new BakFlip MX4 tonneau cover.
BakFlip G2 Tonneau Cover
Like the BakFlip MX4, the BakFlip G2 tonneau cover is a hard, 3 panel, folding design which allows access to most of the truck bed. It has rubber bumpers to prevent damage to rear cab windows, and its side rails drain water away from the bed. However, its rails install inside the bed, and only add around ¼ inch of height. The panels are made of aircraft-grade aluminum.
BakFlip G2 Tonneau Cover Prices
The BakFlip G2 tonneau cover is relatively inexpensive, at around $830 to $1,020.
BakFlip F1 Tonneau Cover
This is another “classic” rigid, tri-fold tonneau cover which can be installed quickly and easily without drilling. It’s FRP (fiberglass reinforced polymer) panels are resistant to dents and scratches, and it uses essentially the same rails as the G2 model above.
BakFlip F1 Tonneau Cover Prices
Depending on the year and model of your truck, you can expect to pay anywhere from $990 to $1,130 for a new BakFlip F1 tonneau cover.
BakFlip FiberMax Tonneau Cover
This rigid, triple-fold tonneau cover can be installed quickly and easily, and generally does not require special tools. It uses EPDM rubber seals to keep the water out of your bed, and uses the same low-rise rails as mist of the other units we’ve looked at today. The panels are made of head-wearing FRP, and the hinges sit flush with the upper surface.
BakFlip FiberMax Tonneau Cover Prices
Depending on the year and model of your truck, you can expect to pay anywhere from $930 to $1,040 for a new BakFlip FiberMax tonneau cover.
BakFlip Revolver X2 Tonneau Cover
The BakFlip Revolver X2 tonneau cover is a roll-up design. The interlinked rolling aluminum slats sit low to the rails when closed, making this one of BakFlip’s most low-profile designs. It can be opened only when the tailgate is down, by pulling on a string latch. It all installs with a socket set, using bolt-on clamps.

Depending on the year and model of your truck, you can expect to pay anywhere from $1,000 to $1,070 for a new BakFlip Revolver X2 tonneau cover.
BakFlip Revolver X4 Tonneau Cover
This is another roll-up tonneau cover from BakFlip, but it avoids the use of Velcro, or even snaps. It is made of aluminum rods and plastic spacers, and all covered by a smooth, unbroken vinyl sheet for a solid, unbroken appearance. When filly closed, the side rails lock the aluminum slats in place. Like most BakFlip tonneau cover designs, you unlatch the system by pulling a string when the tailgate is down.

BakFlip Revolver X4s Tonneau Cover
The X4S is an updated version of the BakFlip X4 tonneau cover described above. The chief difference seems to be that both the top and bottom surfaces of the aluminum and plastic rolling slats are covered in vinyl sheets.

Depending on the year and model of your truck, you can expect to pay anywhere from $960 to $1,100 for a new Leer HF650M tonneau cover.
Where Can I Buy A BakFlip Tonneau Cover Or Something Like It?
BakFlip has a website, of course, and you can find it easily enough by Googling “BakFlip” or even “BAK Industries.” They also sell online on sites like RealTruck.com or Amazon. However, before you search that up, let us urge you to take a closer look at what DECKED and a few other manufacturers have to offer. It won’t cost you anything to look at, and you might be surprised at what you find.
BakFlip Tonneau Cover Alternatives
There are plenty of options other than tonneau covers for protecting your cargo and improving the looks and/or fuel efficiency of your pickup. Many pickup owners use a topper or similar hard cover which raises up to or even above the level of the cab to provide a great deal more enclosed volume.
DECKED, however, offers something else entirely: the DECKED Drawer System.
The DECKED Drawer System – Aerodynamics, Secure Storage And Complete Bed Protection
The DECKED Drawer System streamlines your truck bed, giving you the same kind of aerodynamics and fuel efficiency boost a tonneau cover does, but it does a great deal more besides.
First and most obvious, it provides 2 sturdy, waist-height pull-out drawers, each of which can hold a solid 1,000 pounds of gear and equipment and still open smoothly and easily. On top of them, it offers an attractive and useful high impact polymer raised bed, which sits above your wheel wells – that means you can fill the entire width of your bed with cargo. Lastly, it does so in unprecedented security. There is no way of reaching the drawers from the top without cutting through polymer, steel, and aluminum reinforcements with power tools, and no way to open the drawers without the keys.
The entire DECKED Drawer System is designed, built, and sold in the USA. Everything that goes into it – polymer, steel, and aluminum – is completely recyclable as well.
Best of all, the DECKED Drawer System lets you stack up all the cargo you could normally carry right on top of the unit. More truck bed area, no loss in carrying capacity, and a massive boost in security. It’s just a better option than a BakFlip tonneau cover.
The DECKED Tool Box – Mobile, Secure Tool And Gear Storage For Your Truck
The DECKED Tool Box fits behind the cab of just about any pickup or working truck released in the last 10 years or so. Please feel free to check the DECKED website to find out if it is compatible with your vehicle – it probably is. The DECKED Tool Box is a sturdy, weatherproof container which can carry just about anything you might need – including expensive tools and sporting gear – in complete security.
Better still, the DECKED Tool Box fits easily into what we like to call the DECKED tool organization ecosystem. It ships with accessories like a DECKED D-Box and DECKED Snack Tray small parts container inside. You can also buy other organizational extras or accessories. It can even be ordered with a folding ladder mounted inside for easy access to the tallest truck beds.
A Word About The Recyclability Of Truck Accessories And Modifications
At DECKED, we are dedicated to making greener products that are part of a cleaner, more environmentally conscious world. So why do we use plastic? Well, not all plastics are created equal. An environmentally friendly product requires materials that are reusable, recyclable, or both.
DECKED products are mainly made of high impact, UV-proof polymer resin, steel, and aluminum. Steel and aluminum are of course easy to recycle. We have also developed a very special high impact polymer resin – a plastic – that is just as easy and economical to recycle as the metals we use. In fact, any “plastic waste” we generate in our factory is a resource. We break it down and add it to the next batch of resin.
In the end, that means that DECKED products are surprisingly green and ecologically responsible, as well as strong and great-looking.
We hope you learned a little about the BakFlip tonneau cover, tonneau covers in general, and some of the great alternatives to the tonneau cover you have at your disposal. Remember, when you need to keep your cargo truly secure, DECKED is always the answer.
