How to Organize Your Truck for Spring

How to Organize Your Truck for Spring

Hunting, Fishing, Overlanding & Work Setups

Our mission on this planet is to help you get your sh*t together. Why? Because when you have your gear secure, organized, and accessible, you get to spend more time doing what you love and less time securing, organizing, and accessing your gear. It’s that simple, and spring is the perfect time to start the process

As for how you do that, that’s the fun part. We build intuitive tools that can be used in countless ways — from mobile basecamps and overland setups to job site storage and ranch-ready rigs — and the DECKED community has yet to run out of creative ways to make the most of their spring adventures. So, as we talk about ways to hit the ground running this year, we decided to go straight to the experts.

Here are more than a few ways to use DECKED products to set up your spring for success, pulled straight from more than a few happy customers.

Hunt/Fish

For the outdoorsmen out there, the January–February doldrums are over, and we’re anxiously looking forward to spring bass fishing, upcoming trout seasons, and the wild ride known as turkey season.

For the latter, Steffen F. found the DECKED Drawer System to be the perfect hunting partner for chasing gobblers and listening for spring thunder:

“The Drawer System came in just in time to get it installed before turkey season. Fast forward to the end of turkey season and my truck is nice and organized with all of my calls, ammo, decoys, and camo safely secured in the Drawer System behind my tailgate instead of cluttering the cab of the truck.”

If you tend to lean towards the piscatorial side of things, you know that you don’t just leave the house with a rod and reel. You’ve got tackle, tools, waders, booths, more tackle, and all of that beer for soothing your bruised ego after a good skunking. And if you happen to bring a boat in tow, like Steven D., you’re going to need all the storage you can get:

“I fish tournaments away from home and needed a way to organize my tools, spare prop, spare trailer hub, boat cleaning supplies, extension cords, etc. This was the answer all along for security (under a locked tonneau cover) and for ease of access if something happens roadside. Why did I wait so long?!”

One of those outdoorsmen who attempts to balance work and play in equal parts? Our Tool Box is a great option for big trucks, big jobs, and big trips to backcountry locales. The mysteriously named GH has a monster F-450 that doubles as a work rig and a definitely-not-working rig:

“It was an easy decision to order a DECKED Tool Box for my new F-450 since the need to pull a gooseneck trailer rules out another Drawer System. The quality is once again evident in every aspect of the Tool Box and it looks like it was made for the truck. I have so much extra room in the box, and there's even space on top of the totes for a cased rifle, fishing rod, or similar. I ordered a second snack tray for the right side of the box since it makes good use of otherwise wasted space. Overall I like just about every aspect of this Tool Box.”

Trail-Tested

If you’re more interested in covering ground, you’re still in luck. The obvious answer is overlanding. They’ll be the first to admit that they hoarders of the highest degree and have the ladders, axes, and jerry cans to prove it. When you’re out on a remote two-track, you can’t afford to turn the rig around when you need some supplies, so Brian E. loaded up with a Drawer System so he can take it all along with him:

“Beyond happy! This was the first step in my overlanding build. It took a few hours one afternoon to put together with my 16 year old. The instructions were pretty clear and there are a ton of tutorial videos online to make this an easy first-time build. The Drawers are stocked with heavy recovery gear, hitches, and tools. The Drawers are easy in and out and I have had no problems. I also got the rubber mat for the top for the pups to have something to stand on and not slide around. I highly recommend this to anyone who needs some sturdy organization in their truck.”

Most folks think of construction and heavy hauling when they think of CargoGlide — and it definitely kicks ass on the job site — but it’s also ideal for transporting your transportation. Josh S. used his head and picked up a CargoGlide system to get his mountain bike to the trailhead for easy loading/unloading and more time sending the scary stuff:

“I wanted a slide out for easier access to my mountain bike, fridge, and other accessories, and this was the perfect solution! The slot rail on the sides and back allow for easy cargo tie-downs and everything is completely adjustable.”

And don’t overlook the accessories. When it comes to being beyond cell service without a Circle K in sight, weatherproof portable storage is an essential. Our Payloader bins, Sixer 16 Case, and Honcho Case are great options, but Ryan G. opted to go with our mid-size space maximizer:

“Halfrack 32 works great for our outdoor needs. We have three different Halfrack 32s. We are able to load certain items into each rack and have them ready for adventure when we need them. Grabbing what we need when we need and hitting the trail has never been easier.”

Work Smarter, Play Harder

Not to bring everybody back down to earth, but you’re probably going to have to do some work at some point this spring. The good news? With DECKED, it won’t have to be as much work. For Rob D., he needed a solution that balanced storage space with a low profile, while also being able to withstand the torrential South Florida rain. The DECKED Tool Box answered the call:

“Great Tool Box. It keeps the South Florida rains out and keeps my tools organized. It is very durable and looks great too. When I have equipment or lumber in the truck bed, it doesn't dent or scratch this box, like an aluminum box would. The locking mechanism is really solid.”

Need to do some fine-tuning? Even the most skeptical of old-school ranchers can fall in love with the small-but-mighty Sixer 16 Case. Of course, it helps when your wife buys it for you like Lindsey M. did:

“I was skeptical about buying a plastic box, but man I was wrong. This thing is awesome! I bought it as a gift for my husband. He is a farrier and rancher and needed a quality box for his tools. This box meets every requirement. It seals so things don’t get wet, can fit all his knick knacks and he loves the latch system. Ordering was a breeze and shipping was quick. He already wants another!”

Last, but certainly not least, you could go with the ultimate storage cheat code and get your truck fully rigged with a DECKED Drawer System and CargoGlide. This two-in-one gives you the hauling capacity and payload, with plenty of weatherproof storage to get you off the job site and headed for the trailhead in no time flat. Just look at how happy it made Dominick C.

“Well, I finally pulled the trigger on DECKED and I couldn’t be happier. I have one place for all of my tools, fishing, hunting, and camping gear. The drawers are solid and the CargoGlide is great for my cooler and other items that I constantly need access to while out on trips. You don’t lose bed space with DECKED, you actually just make the space usable. Great product and customer service, plus it’s all made in the USA!"

We could go on and on about use-cases and value, but the proof is in your perfect spring season. When you’re facing unpredictable weather, muddy roads, feisty fish, and strutting toms, you don’t want to be lost in a pile of junk. No matter what system you choose, you’ll be choosing order over chaos, so you can make the most of the chaos that really matters—getting after it this spring season.
