Calling something “plastic” hasn't been an insult since the ‘80s.
The DECKED Drawer System is made primarily from recycled high-density polyethylene. HDPE. Yeah, it’s plastic. (Cue a few eye-rolls.) You know what else is plastic? Military-grade gas and water cans, football helmets, riot shields, and jet engine components. To name a few.
That HDPE is co-molded to a galvanized steel subframe. (Cue a few hell yeahs from the metalheads.)
The material isn’t the real question. The real question is whether it survives a truck bed, which is one of the most abusive places you can put anything. Heavy loads. Hot summers, brutal winters. Sun, dust, road spray, and rocks.
So let’s skip the assumptions and foregone conclusions that sound something like, “Plastic bad,” and go through what DECKED is engineered to take, one hit, slam, and “oops” at a time.
Deck Payload vs. Drawer Capacity.
Two numbers. Nice and simple.
The top deck is rated for 2,000 lbs on top for full-size trucks and 1,000 lbs for midsize. Both Systems haul 400 lbs inside: 200 lbs in each of the two drawers in the Full-Size System, and 400 lbs in the single MegaDrawer for Midsize Systems. That’s 2,400 and 1,400 lbs total, respectively. The drawers glide beneath that burly top deck, so you can stack a pallet of pavers up top and still pull a drawer for the tools.
Do the math on your own kit. Unless your daily drives involve hauling a half dozen forklift batteries or crates of gold bullion, you’re probably good.
Built for the Washboard, the Worksite — and Wednesday.
Your bed takes hits that never make the highlight reel. Washboard dirt roads have a habit of rattling your molars loose and turning cheap bed accessories into maracas. Dropped tools risk not only the tool itself but whatever you dropped it on. Daily life has a habit of turning repetition into damage.
We build DECKED to handle all of that.
HDPE is a tough, impact-resistant polymer, and the galvanized steel subframe sits under the deck to carry the load. Mounting points tie from the steel c-channels of the drawer system, into steel brackets, through steel turnbuckles, and into your truck’s factory tie-down points.
Plastic does its job. Metal does its job. Both handling what they’re suited to best.
None of this was an accident. This is the result of designers and engineers understanding the materials, rigorously testing in-house, and getting product into the hands of Ambassadors and others to test in the field.
But the toughest test of all? Everyday life. Yeah, it’s pretty fun to throw a Honcho 80 Case off a cliff, or load a Drawer System several factors beyond its rated limit. But the best R&D info comes from our customers, and the quiet but brutal trials of simply opening and closing drawers and loading up that top deck every damn day.

Sun, Snow, and Everything Between.
A truck bed lives outside. It bakes in a Phoenix parking lot in July, then freezes in a North Dakota blizzard in January.
Metal conducts heat instantly — both toward and away — turning your bed into an oven rack or an ice rink that'll freeze your skin on contact. DECKED is molded from HDPE infused with heavy-duty UV inhibitors. It won't get chalky in the sun, it won't warp under desert heat, and it won't turn brittle when the thermometer drops below zero.
Thanks to a system of overlapping panels, moisture seals, and tight tolerances, the drawers are completely weatherproof. Rain, blowing snow, dust, and highway spray stay on the outside.
One distinction worth making: weatherproof isn't waterproof. It's built for anything falling out of the sky or blowing off the road. It will not, however, protect your tools if you forget to put the truck in park on the boat ramp, or if you drown your rig in a river crossing you "totally had figured out."
Weatherproof: More Than What’s in the Drawers.
HDPE doesn’t rust. Ever. Any questions?
The steel that provides the muscle underneath is galvanized and sealed safely out of the weather under the top deck. Every piece of mounting hardware is either stainless steel or treated with a zinc chromate anti-corrosion coating. The handles are cast aluminum—built oversized so you can pop them with work gloves on.
And then there’s the moving parts. Anyone who’s put drawers in a truck bed knows the real enemy isn't just weight; it’s fine dust and gravel. Traditional ball-bearing slides hate grit—they grind, seize up, and force you to wrestle your tools out of the bed. We skipped the delicate cabinet slides entirely. DECKED drawers roll on massive, sealed bearing wheels along heavy-duty galvanized tracks. Dust, sand, and saw chips get rolled right over, not ground into the tracks.
So when we talk about durability, we’re not just talking about the plastic shell. We’re talking about the parts that actually have to move when it’s 10 degrees and you want to go home.
Material Death Match: Polymer vs. Metal.
Metal toolboxes aren’t all bad. They probably wouldn’t still be around if they were.
Or maybe, just maybe, they’re still around because that’s been the only option.
Steel rusts. Aluminum dents and dings. HDPE takes the hit and snaps back, with steel underneath to handle the heavier loads. Plastic gets a bad rap. But we aren’t talking about Tupperware here.
We’re talking about the purposefully chosen polymers that suit the end use. We’re talking about HDPE — the same exact plastic used to make the gas can that’s been bouncing around your truck bed and left in the sun, rain, and snow for the last 15 years without batting an eye. (We’ve seen metal jerry cans succumb to dents and rust in half that time.)
Aluminum tool boxes end up looking like they’ve retired from the jousting lineup at Medieval Times. Steel boxes’ coatings chip and then it’s just a matter of time before oxidation turns them to dust in the wind (sing it with us).
Here’s the thing, though: this is all apples to oranges. A toolbox is a box. It isn’t a platform. It doesn’t roll your gear out smoother than a greased pig on a waterslide. The Drawer System spans the length of the bed, holds up to 2,000 lbs on top, and gives you full-length drawers underneath. So “Is DECKED stronger than a metal toolbox?” is a little like asking whether a workbench is stronger than a lunch pail. They do different jobs.
Metal sometimes wins on price and maintaining bed depth. Where the DECKED Drawer System wins: everything else.

Straight Answers.
How much weight can DECKED hold?
The DECKED Drawer System holds 2,000 lbs on the deck and 200 lbs in each drawer for full-size trucks, and 1,000 lbs on top with 400 lbs in the single MegaDrawer for midsize trucks.
Is DECKED durable?
The DECKED Drawer System is built from recycled HDPE co-molded to a galvanized steel subframe, with UV and temperature-resistant polymer, corrosion-resistant hardware, and sealed bearing drawer wheels. It’s built to outlast your truck and backed by our No BS Lifetime Warranty.
Can DECKED handle off-road use?
Yes. The DECKED Drawer System mounts to your bed’s tie-down points and is built for loads, vibration, and rough roads. Just ask DECKED Ambassador and Baja 1000 winner Christopher Polvoorde.
Is DECKED waterproof?
The DECKED Drawer System is not waterproof — it’s weatherproof. It keeps out rain, snow, and road spray. Anything falling from the sky or carried on the wind. It is not rated for submersion. But neither is your truck.
Does DECKED rust?
The HDPE doesn’t rust. The subframe is galvanized steel, and the hardware is stainless steel or coated to resist corrosion.
Is DECKED stronger than a metal toolbox?
Yes. In many ways, like corrosion resistance and weight-carrying capacity, the Drawer System wins. But they do different jobs. A metal toolbox is storage. The DECKED Drawer System is storage plus a beefy platform on top that can carry 1,000 to 2,000 lbs that also keeps tools and gear accessible even with a full load, and rolls it all right out to you.

The Skinny.
Is plastic tough enough for your truck?
If we were talking about a laundry basket, no. But high-density polyethylene backed by structural steel isn't just along for the ride — it outlasts painted metal, shrugs off dents, keeps weather out, and doesn't rust into red dust.
