What Are BakFlip Tonneau Covers, And How Do They Compare To What DECKED Has To Offer?
BakFlip tonneau covers are very popular all over North America, and appear on many different late-model pickup trucks and work trucks. They all tend to have a very low-profile design, so there is little opportunity for outside-facing branding. The next time you see a slim, black tonneau cover, look closer. It might well be a BakFlip design produced by BAK Industries.
We’ll assess the strengths and weaknesses of BakFlip tonneau covers generally, as well as the pros and cons of popular models such as the BakFlip G2 tonneau covers, BakFlip MX4 tonneau covers, and their “Revolver X” series of roll-up tonneau covers. We’ll also look at several alternatives from DECKED that leave the limitations of the “tonneau cover” design behind entirely.
But first, let’s look at some individual BakFlip tonneau cover models.
BakFlip Roll-Up Tonneau Covers
The first few BakFlip tonneau covers we’ll examine are roll-up models. Unlike many roll-up tonneau covers on the market today, the BakFlip models here all have a rigid, segmented aluminum and plastic frame which prevents access to the bed from the sides while the tonneau cover is down and latched.
Revolver X2 BakFlip Tonneau Cover
The BakFlip Revolver X2 tonneau cover is a great example of a more secure roll-up design. It uses a series of interlinked aluminum slats covered in a vinyl topper, allowing it to bend along only one access. It is also one of BakFlip’s most low-profile designs. This model can only be opened when the tailgate is down, adding an extra layer of security. It all installs with a socket set, and requires no drilling.
Revolver X2 BakFlip Tonneau Covers Pricing
New BakFlip Revolver X2 covers must be bought for your exact truck bed measurements. Depending on the year and model of your truck, the cost could vary from around $1,000 to around $1,070.
Revolver X4 BakFlip Tonneau Covers
This is another example of the fine roll-up tonneau covers BakFlip offers. Like the X2, the X4 is made of aluminum rods with plastic spacers, and covered by a smooth, unbroken vinyl sheet on top. This delivers an attractive, unbroken appearance when closed. Like many of the BakFlip tonneau covers we’ll look at today, you unlatch the system by pulling a string when the tailgate is down.
Revolver X4 BakFlip Tonneau Covers Pricing
New BakFlip Revolver X4 covers must be bought for your exact truck bed measurements. Depending on the year and model of your truck, the cost should be between $940 and $1,080.
Revolver X4S BakFlip Tonneau Covers
The X4S is an updated version of the BakFlip X4 tonneau covers we’ve just seen. In the X4S, though, both the top and bottom surfaces of the aluminum and slats are covered in vinyl sheets, hiding the aluminum even when rolled up.
Revolver X4S BakFlip Tonneau Cover Prices
New BakFlip Revolver X4S covers must be bought for your exact truck bed measurements. Depending on the year and model of your truck, the cost could vary from around $950 to $1,100 or so.
BakFlip Folding Tonneau Covers
The next few BakFlip tonneau covers we’ll examine are 3-panel fold-up models. These use hard panels – typically fiberglass, plastic, aluminum, or a combination of the three, to provide a hard, protective cover for your truck bed. All of these models can be secured in the “open” position as well as “closed.” You will often see these described as “BakFlip HD Tonneau Covers.”
BakFlip MX4 Tonneau Covers
The classic BakFlip MX4 tonneau covers are hard, 3 panel, folding designs. All three panels lift up, blocking only the top 6-8 inches of the bed. Note that this is the part that would be hardest to reach in any case. The panels have rubber bumpers to prevent any damage to the rear cab windows when stowed in the “up” position.
This model's side rails cap your bed’s existing rails, so it has a slightly higher profile design than most other BakFlip tonneau covers. Unlike the others, it can be opened whether the tailgate is up or down.
BakFlip MX4 Tonneau Covers Pricing
Again, these are sized for particular truck beds. Depending on the year and model of your truck, you can expect to pay anywhere from $1,000 to $1,100 for a BakFlip MX4 tonneau cover.
BakFlip G2 Tonneau Covers
Like the BakFlip MX4 design, BakFlip G2 tonneau covers use a tri-panel folding system which leaves the majority of the truck bed open when folded away. It is a low-profile mount whose side rails drain water away from the bed. On this model, the panels are made primarily of powder-coated aluminum.
BakFlip G2 Tonneau Covers Pricing
BakFlip G2 tonneau covers are relatively inexpensive, at around $830 to $1,020 depending on your truck model and year.
BakFlip F1 Tonneau Covers
Another rigid, tri-fold tonneau cover which can be installed without drilling, the BakFlip F1 uses FRP (fiberglass reinforced polymer) panels. These are not just light but also resistant to dents and scratches. BakFlip F1 tonneau covers use essentially the same rails as the G2 model above.
BakFlip F1 Tonneau Cover Pricing
Depending on the year and model of your truck, BakFlip F1 tonneau covers could set you back anywhere from $990 to $1,130.
BakFlip Tonneau Cover Alternatives
You have many options besides tonneau covers. Many people prefer truck toppers because they provide more enclosed cargo space and give the truck a more “SUV-like” appearance. Others prefer the security and utility of a DECKED solution.
The DECKED Tool Box – Simple, Secure And Mobile
The DECKED Tool Box is a “saddle style” rail-mounted tool or gear container that fits a wide range of today’s most popular working trucks and pickups. It provides solid, strong, and waterproof storage for expensive tools, camping equipment, sporting gear, or just about anything else you can fit inside. The lock and its receiver plate are literally armored, so the security of your gear is assured.
Better still, the DECKED Tool Box fits easily into what we like to call the DECKED Tool Organization Ecosystem. It ships with accessories like a DECKED D-Box and DECKED Snack Tray small parts container inside. You can also buy other organizational extras or accessories. It can even be ordered with a folding ladder mounted inside for easy access to the tallest truck beds.
The DECKED Drawer System Everything You Want From A Tonneau Cover, And So Much More
The DECKED Drawer System streamlines your truck bed and improves its appearance just like BakFlip Tonneau Covers do, but it doesn’t stop there.
As you can see, the DECKED Drawer System has 2 wide drawers that span the depth of the bed. Each of these can hold up to 1,000 pounds of gear and still open whisper-smooth. They can easily be subdivided with a set of drawer accessories, and can hold a range of DECKED small tool boxes safely and securely.
Next, consider the way it lifts the bed of the truck up over the wheel wells. This allows you to use the entire area of your bed, and keeps even the roughest, heaviest loads from scratching or damaging that bed.
The entire DECKED Drawer System is designed, built, and sold in the USA. Better still, all of our materials – polymer, steel, and aluminum – are completely recyclable.
Best of all, the DECKED Drawer System still lets you load a massive amount of cargo in the bed. It won’t buckle or bend in normal use, and can take a much heavier load than you think!
Most importantly, though, is the added security. There is no way to open the drawers without the key to the locks, and you can’t even access the locks unless you open the tailgate or rear doors!
What Are Tonneau Covers (BakFlip And Other Manufacturers) Meant To Achieve?
A tonneau cover is basically a lid for your truck’s bed. It attaches either to the rails of the box itself or just inside the rails. Most low-profile options mount fully or partially inside the rails. Tonneau covers have 4 real jobs, and they usually do 3 of them pretty well.
Job 1: Tonneau covers keep the rain and weather out of your truck bed and off its cargo. BakFlip tonneau covers do a fine job at this, and so do most high to mid-market tonneau covers. They are reasonably weatherproof, and that’s all it takes to succeed here.
Job 2: Tonneau covers make your truck more aerodynamic. This gives you better fuel efficiency (and possibly a better top speed, but going at top speed is pretty irresponsible anyway). Better efficiency means a lower carbon footprint, as well. Again, most tonneau covers, including all of the BakFlip tonneau covers we’ve looked at today, do this quite well. Unless it is loose or poorly installed, any tonneau cover should reduce your truck’s drag.
Job 3: Tonneau covers are intended to make the truck look tidier, whether or not the bed is full of “stuff.” Now, this is an esthetic issue, and everyone will have to be their own judge. IMHO, BakFlip tonneau covers look about as good as any other tonneau covers I’ve seen, and better than some.
Job 4: The fourth job is security, and for many tonneau covers at least, security is more of an afterthought than a priority. A BakFlip tonneau cover should make it harder for someone to get into your truck bed without authorization. For the most part they do that. There are tonneau covers which are completely soft or stretchy, and only attach to the sides with Velcro. BakFlip tonneau covers are much better than that. Even their roll-up designs are “hard” after a fashion. You can’t just snake your arm in from the side. However, they don’t have anything like the security of a DECKED Drawer System or DECKED Tool Box.
Where Can I Buy A BakFlip Tonneau Cover Or Something Like It?
BakFlip has a website, of course, and you can buy BakFlip tonneau covers in a range of different truck accessories stores all over North America. Before you run off and google that, though, consider some of the DECKED alternatives we’ve looked at today.
Where Are Your Truck Accessories Made?
DECKED is proud to be an American company, and we manufacture all of our fine products out of our factory in Defiance, Ohio. We do all of our assembly, shipping, quality control, and warranty work there, too. Not all pickup and working truck accessories manufacturers can say the same.
How Environmentally Friendly Are BakFlip Tonneau Covers?
Perhaps we should spend more time thinking about the ecological and climate implications of our buying choices. Tonneau covers, like anything else, can be made from a wide range of materials, and each has its own level of environmental impact. We know that steel, aluminum, and other metals can be recycled easily, but what about the plastics and synthetic materials that make up something like a BakFlip tonneau cover?
This is something we take seriously at DECKED, and we knew from the very beginning that we’d have to develop some really impressive plastics if we wanted to make accessories that can be displayed proudly these days. We know that it is important to protect our planet, and that our customers would want DECKED’s carbon footprint to be as small as possible. We are proud to source our materials from suppliers who feel the same way.
Of course, we made our unique blend of plastic resins strong, resilient, and durable, but we also made sure it was both easy and economical to recycle. In fact, all of the alternatives to tonneau covers we sell contain a great deal of recycled material already.
We hope you learned a little about BakFlip tonneau covers in general, as well as about some of the great alternatives to tonneau covers you can get from manufacturers like DECKED. When you need to keep your cargo truly secure, DECKED can help you do it in style.
